Feedback That Works: a Training for New Managers
Can you build engagement and collaboration on your team?
This project is for a small start-up experiencing a lot of growth quickly. They had to promote several people into their first management role.
The company wanted to reinforce or build best practices in management behavior in order to keep productivity within direct reports and drive measurable results.
After defining and analyzing the problem, we determined that a combination of solutions was the way to go. In addition to this eLearning solution, we recommended live workshops, identifying experienced managers to coach new managers and deeper learning initiatives with a longer timeline.
This course is designed for new managers recently promoted in a fast-moving environment.
The scenarios selected were based on real experiences and feedback in the analysis stage. Using Mayer's Personalization Principle, a friendly, conversational tone was selected.
Action Map using MindMeister
The goal of an action map is to design activities and the overall direction of the course. It is one of my favorite steps in the process and whether you use ADDIE or SAM, action maps help get all stakeholders on the same page.
Storyboarding
Just like a movie script needs a "shot list," a good eLearning course needs storyboarding.
I love storyboarding for programming and visual notes, especially when the client's brand is specific or even when they have a general sense of what they want. The programming and visual notes help bring everything together.
Visual Mockups and Mood Boards
These serve a few purposes: what is the look and feel of the course? Is it on brand for the company? Designing the overall visual flavor of the course is a helpful communication tool and makes the design in Articulate 360 go much smoother and faster.
We did have a few extra elements from the mood board that were ultimately unneeded and that is typical in the design pro
"We wanted managers giving more detailed feedback and the examples used [in the project] all had the most correct answers as the most detailed. We definitely noticed employee EOY reviews had more examples".
"We ended up requesting some character changes from the original planning stages. This was implemented smoothly. Thank you!"
"A great intro, review, or supplement to getting new managers to provide feedback, stay accountable, and make sure everyone participates."
